Protecting the rights of LGBTQ communities in refugee camps in Kenya

The protection of LGBTQ refugees in Kenyan refugee camps is a pressing human rights issue that demands immediate attention and action. These individuals, fleeing persecution and violence based on their sexual orientation and gender identity, seek safety and refuge in Kenya.

However, they often encounter discrimination, violence, and challenges within the very camps meant to provide sanctuary.

Kenyan law criminalizes homosexual acts, making it difficult for LGBTQ+ individuals to openly express their identities. Consequently, LGBTQ+ refugees living in camps face a double jeopardy – the persecution they fled from in their home countries and the hostility they encounter within Kenya itself.

Our Research and Learning Associate, Advocate of the High Court of Kenya Adv. Evelyn Gichero has written a comprehensive thesis exploring the intersectionality of LGBTQ identities and refugee status, shedding light on the discrimination and violence LGBTQ refugees face.

Moreover, this thesis has explored the roles of key stakeholders, such as the UNHCR, NGOs, and the Kenyan government, in providing protection and support to LGBTQ refugees.
