08Aug By Advocate Joan LangatAugust 19, 20260Legal Aid From Detention to Safety At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday August, 16th 2026, Refugee Legal Networks (RLN) witnessed the departure of refugees who had been detained in various police stations in Nairobi, following the Court’s orders directing their transfer to a designated refugee settlement in Dadaab. The transfer marks an important step in the implementation of the Court’s orders and in ensuring that the affected refugees can access the protection framework available to them. For RLN, witnessing their departure was a significant moment. It was a reminder that access to justice can have a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of refugees and asylum seekers. The matter, however, remains ongoing, the Commissioner for Refugee Services is scheduled to appear before the Court on 24th September 2026, when the Court will further address the issues arising from the matter. RLN will continue to monitor the proceedings and advocate for the rights, dignity and protection of refugees and asylum seekers. A step towards safety. A continuing pursuit of justice.
