Nightmare For Anyuak Refugees On World Refugee Day 2024

As the world marked the World Refugee Day on 20th June, 2024 under the theme “To a world where refugees are welcome” the Anyuak refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement woke up to savage attacks by other Refugees leaving hundreds injured, displaced and some alleged fatalities. It is reported that others fled to other cities e.g. Kisumu and Nairobi for fear of being involuntarily returned back to the camps.

The reaction by the Kenyan authorities to forcefully return many of them to camp without putting in place any measures to ensure their security, led to a humanitarian crisis. Information that is readily available in the public domain shows that any time from now, the refugees that were returned back are in danger of more violent attacks allegedly due to lack of proper security measures.

Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement (Turukana County)

The Department of Refugee Services (DRS) established under the Refugee Act 2021 has the sole responsibility of ensuring that the refugees within the country are safe and free from persecution and refoulment. In our view, the alleged failure by the DRS has caused the current state of fear and uncertainty amongst the Anyuak Refugees.

Kenya being a signatory to various local, regional and international refugee conventions, has a duty to provide security for all the refugees in Kenya.

Refugee Legal Networks is closely monitoring the situation and shall in due cause bring awareness of the plight that faces the Anyuak community within the settlement and refugees’ camps.
