A New Chapter in Legal Empowerment: Celebrating Our Inaugural CPD Webinar for Advocates

We are thrilled to announce the resounding success of our inaugural Continuous Professional Development (CPD) webinar, held exclusively for advocates across Kenya this past December. Organized by Refugee Legal Networks (RLN), an organization proudly accredited by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK); this landmark event marked a significant step forward in our mission to strengthen legal expertise and foster inclusive justice.

Building Bridges Through Knowledge

At Refugee Legal Networks, our core belief is that a robust legal community is the cornerstone of a just society. The 2 Day webinar, titled “Refugee Status Determination Process,”  and “Refugee Status Determination Appeal Process,” was designed with a clear purpose: to equip legal practitioners with the nuanced knowledge and practical skills needed to navigate the complex and evolving landscape of forced migration law.

We were humbled by the overwhelming response. Hundreds of advocates from diverse practice backgrounds, from bustling Nairobi firms to sole practitioners in county towns registered their interest, demonstrating a vibrant commitment to professional growth and a deep-seated desire to serve some of the most vulnerable individuals in our communities.

A Deep Dive into Critical Issues

The two-day virtual session was packed with insightful discourse and practical learning:

  • Expert Facilitation: The webinar was led by distinguished practitioners and scholars in refugee law, who brought both academic rigor and frontline experience to the discussion.
  • Key Topics Covered: Participants engaged with critical themes including:
    • The evolving interpretation of the 1951 Refugee Convention within the Kenyan legal context.
    • Procedural updates on refugee status determination and appeals.
    • Ethical considerations and trauma-informed approaches when representing asylum seekers.
    • Intersections with human rights law, children’s rights, and gender-based violence protections.
  • Interactive Q&A: A dynamic question-and-answer session fostered a rich exchange of ideas, with advocates raising real-world scenarios from their practice, creating a collaborative learning environment.

Why This Matters

Accreditation by the Law Society of Kenya is a privilege we hold with the utmost seriousness. It is a testament to our commitment to high-quality, relevant legal education. By offering CPD points through this webinar, we are not only fulfilling a mandatory professional requirement for advocates but also strategically broadening the pool of legal professionals competent in refugee law. This directly translates to:

  • Enhanced Access to Justice: More skilled advocates mean better representation for refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Professional Diversification: Kenyan lawyers are expanding their practice areas with a socially impactful specialization.
  • Stronger Legal Frameworks: Informed advocates contribute to more nuanced and progressive jurisprudence in Kenya.

Gratitude and the Path Forward

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Law Society of Kenya for its supportive accreditation framework that allows organizations like ours to contribute to the profession’s growth. A special thank you to our phenomenal speakers, the dedicated RLN team who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and, most importantly, to every advocate who participated with such enthusiasm and thoughtful engagement.

Your active participation is the true measure of this event’s success.

The vibrant discussions and positive feedback have already ignited plans for our 2026 CPD series. We are committed to making this a regular and impactful feature of the Kenyan legal calendar, addressing not only refugee law but also intersecting areas of human rights, immigration, and international protection.

To the advocates who joined us: Thank you for helping us write this successful first chapter. Together, we are building a legal community that is more knowledgeable, more empathetic, and more powerful in its pursuit of justice for all.
